It is the most common question we are asked at survey stage, and the honest answer is that it depends less on the product than on how the opening will be used day to day.
How much of the opening actually opens
A bi-folding door folds its panels back against one another and stacks them to the side, clearing as much as ninety per cent of the structural opening. A sliding door always parks one panel behind another, so even a well-designed three-track system opens around two thirds of the aperture at best.
If the point of the opening is to make the living room and the terrace behave as one space during the cooler months, the bifold wins clearly.
What it looks like when closed
This is where sliding systems answer back. A bifold has a vertical frame at every panel join, so a six-panel run shows six vertical lines. A slim sliding door has far fewer interruptions — often just one slender interlock across the whole opening.
A door that is closed for eight months of the year and open for four is, in practice, mostly a window. That argues for the cleaner closed appearance of a slim slider.
The threshold
Both can be detailed with a flush threshold so the floor finish runs straight through. Both need that detail drained properly, because a flush track in a downpour is a channel for water unless it has somewhere to go. Any supplier who waves this question away is telling you something useful about their installations.
Cost and maintenance
Like for like, bi-folding systems cost more — there is more hardware, more panels and more running gear. They also need their tracks kept clear of sand, which in this region is a real maintenance item rather than a theoretical one. Sliding systems carry fewer moving parts and tolerate neglect better.
A reasonable rule of thumb
Choose a bi-folding door when the opening is the main connection between the house and the garden and will genuinely be opened often. Choose a slim slider when the view matters more than the opening, or when the door faces the prevailing wind and dust.
On many villas the right answer is both: a bifold onto the terrace where the family actually walks through, and slim sliders along the elevations that exist to be looked out of.
