Glass quotations are dense with terminology, and much of it is used loosely. Four decisions do most of the work.
Solar control coating
This is the one that changes how a room feels. A microscopically thin metallic coating reflects a large share of the sun energy while letting visible light through. The room stays bright but takes far less heat.
The number to look for is the g-value or solar factor, which describes the proportion of solar energy that gets through. Lower is cooler.
Low-E coating
Low emissivity coatings reduce radiant heat transfer across the cavity of a double-glazed unit. In practice, most good units sold here combine solar control and low-E properties in a single coating, so this is usually not a separate decision.
Tint
Tinting is body colour in the glass itself. It reduces glare and cuts some heat, but it does it by absorbing energy, which means the pane itself gets hot. A coating reflects energy instead of absorbing it, which is why a lightly tinted coated unit usually outperforms a heavily tinted uncoated one — and looks better from inside.
Be cautious about very dark tints. They make rooms gloomy, and people respond by turning more lights on.
Laminated versus toughened
These describe safety behaviour, not heat. Toughened glass breaks into blunt granules. Laminated glass holds together on an interlayer when broken.
Overhead glazing must be laminated — there is no reasonable argument for anything else above people. Laminated glass also cuts noise noticeably and blocks almost all ultraviolet light, so it is worth considering on any elevation facing traffic.
What matters less than the brochure suggests
Cavity gas fill makes a measurable but modest difference in this climate compared with the coating. Very large cavity widths bring diminishing returns. And no glass specification rescues a badly sealed installation, which is where most real-world performance is lost.
A sensible default
For most villa glazing in the UAE: a thermally broken frame, a double-glazed unit with a solar-control coating, laminated on the inner pane where noise or safety matters. Everything beyond that is refinement.
